Christmas Tree Lighting planned for Tuesday

File/Watts/Journal Scene Thousands gather each Christmas for the Flowetown Garden Club’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.


T he Flowertown Garden Club Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is planned for Dec. 3 on the plaza in front of Summerville Town Hall. The treelighting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. but the crowd traditionally gathers earlier to enjoy the pre-program concert.This year’s musical performances begin at 6 p.m. with the Lower School Chorus from Pinewood Preparatory School under the direction of Erin Bromley.

The Summerville Brass Ensemble of the Summerville High School band will perform under the direction of Leslie Gilreath and Dr. Justin Clarkson.

The program will kickoff with a welcome by Flowertown Garden Club President Janice Messex followed by the invocation by Rev. Bob Howell, senior minister at Bethany United Methodist Church.

A musical selection from the Summerville High School Chorus under the direction of Joe Ford will be followed by the introduction of Mayor Bill Collins by Messex.

Collins will offer remarks and then give the word for the lights to be turned on.

The Lowcountry Saxophone Choir and the Pinewood Lower School Chorus will perform a selection of Christmas music.

The event will close with the singing of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” which traditionally is sung by all in attendance.

The Flowertown Garden Club Christmas Tree Lighting Committee 2013 includes Jan Martin, Kennedy Branstetter, Carolyn Rogerson and B. Magner.
