The Lady Green Wave rode an explosive second period effort to a 56-52 victory over Wando Tuesday.
Summerville (4-1) carried a 13-11 lead into the second period and then outscored Wando (0-7) by a 21-12 margin over the next eight minutes for a 34-23 lead at the half.
Seniors Heather Chapman and Zuri Green led the charge, combining for 12 points in the period.
Both seniors and junior Rodnesha Capers hit three-point shots during the period.
But the Lady Warriors cut the lead to 4 by the end of the third and took a one-point lead (52-51) with 1:40 remaining in the final period.
“Wando came in with a great game plan, and we really struggled defensively,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “We had good offensive performances from Heather, Rodnesha and Ashley (Green), but to me the key to us surviving tonight was Chelsi Anderson. She came in and played great defense and hit two clutch shots in the fourth quarter. It’s a good feeling to know you have girls like her you can depend on to come in and light a fuse.”
Wando took its 52-51 lead with a bucket on a break, but Anderson answered by hitting a jump shot.
Wando then missed a shot and Zuri Green grabbed the rebound for Summerville. That led to a pair of free throws from Chapman to give the Lady Green Wave a 55-52 lead with only 40 seconds remaining. Another free throw from Chapman and a key rebound by Ashley Green secured the win for Summerville.
Chapman finished 4 of 8 from behind the arc and led all scorers with 21 points. Capers was 3 of 4 from three-point range and finished with 11 points. Ashley Green also finished with 11.
Kimberly Smalls led Wando with 20 points, including 7 third-quarter points.
