Green Wave boys avenge loss to Warriors
The Summerville boys handed Wando its first loss of the season Tuesday.
The Green Wave (4-1) avenged a loss to the Warriors (7-1) earlier this month, handing Wando a 76-51 loss in Summerville.
“We played 24 minutes of our best basketball,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We didn’t play well in the second quarter but I’m proud of what we did the rest of the night. We played good defense and rebounded well. Also, Wando had a cold shooting night. They are a good team and that sophomore of theirs can really play.”
Wando sophomore Jamez Rogers led all scorers with 25 points. However, Summerville had four players post double-digit scoring.
Senior Tyler Palmer led Summerville with a career-high 18 points. Seniors John Jenkins and Timmy Singleton finished with 17 and 11, respectively. Junior Kawuan Cox finished with 15.
“Kawuan is starting to get his basketball legs under him; he shot the ball well and rebounded well,” Elliott said. “But it was a good team win. We have let teams penetrate against our defense too much and we did a better job with that.”
Summerville hit five field goals in the opening period and made seven of nine free throws for a 19-6 lead. The Wave also had five field goals in the second period, but only took two free throws, hitting one.
Meanwhile, Wando scored 23 points in the second to cut the lead to 2 by halftime. Rogers had 12 points in the period, three of which came on a shot from behind the arc. He also scored with a dunk that followed a Wando steal and fast break.
But Summerville came out of the locker room strong to outscore Wando 27-14 in the third period and 18-8 in the fourth. Palmer sparked the surge with a three-pointer early in the third on his way to a 10-point period.
Summerville was 18 of 25 at the free throw line while Wando was 10 of 19.
Up next for the Green Wave is the Stall Holiday Tournament. Summerville opens the tournament with a game against Stratford Friday at 5:45 p.m.
