The Summerville boys opened strong and closed strong Tuesday to win their Region 8-AAAA opener.
The Green Wave claimed a 20-10 lead in the first period but had trouble sinking baskets in the second and had a sluggish start to the third as the Cougars cut the lead to 4 points. Then Summerville forced some turnovers and scored on some breaks to regain momentum and secure the win.
“We only had eight turnovers so that was good, but we left a lot of points on the board with missed layups and free throws,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We didn’t really break the game open until Colleton got down and had to press in the fourth. John Jenkins had a great game and Xavier Robinson had 10 rebounds for us.”
Jenkins scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth period. Tyler Palmer finished with 8 points and Robinson had 7.
Latrell Nieves led the Cougars with 11 points.
Summerville improved to 11-4 on the season with the win while Colleton fell to 3-8.
The Green Wave hosts Beaufort Friday for another region contest.
The boys’ game will follow the girls’ game, which is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
“We need to get all five guys going at peak performance for 11-1 Beaufort,” Elliott said. They only have one loss.”
