Summerville girls run to Lower State title

  • Thursday, November 1, 2012

Junior Anya Bunao placed third and sophomore Abby Bozarth was fourth to lead the Summerville Green Wave girls’ cross country team to the AAAA Lower State title Monday.
Several Dorchester Two runners turned in a solid performance during the Lower State meet held at Old Santee Canal State Park.
The Green Wave and Ashley Ridge girls’ and boys’ teams qualified for Saturday’s state championship meet to be held in Columbia. For the Swamp Foxes, it is the first time either squad has qualified for the state championship race.
The top five teams in each race earned a spot in Saturday’s final. In the girls’ race, Summerville scored 57 points to outpace Wando (66) and Stratford (92). Freshman Emily Schuler and junior Renee Bourgeois placed 12th and 13th, respectively, to bolster the Green Wave’s strong effort.
Ashley Ridge had three runners place in the Top 20 — junior Emily Scott in 11th and seniors Meagan Jones and Christin VanHoy in 17th and 18th.
By placing in the Top 20, individuals earned a spot in the state final even if their teams did not qualify. Fort Dorchester junior Autumn Stone took eighth place.
Bluffton won a competitive boys’ race. The Bobcats scored 74 points to edge out Stratford at 76 and Wando at 78. The next group was even closer as Carolina Forest took fourth at 106 points, and Ashley Ridge earned the final spot at the state meet with 108 points, only one better than Fort Dorchester.
Rollings Middle School eighth grader Jackson Ellenburg was Ashley Ridge’s top runner, placing ninth. Junior Tyler Ohsfeldt was 13th, and junior Caleb Dorrity was 16th.
Three Patriots earned spots at the state meet — sophomore Koh Matsumoto, freshman Stephen Gillette and senior Roland Otadoy. Also, Summerville senior Matt Lucius ran to a fourth-place finish to extend his season.
