Seven Pinewood Prep seniors signed with Division 1 athletic programs Nov. 14.
Three basketball players, two golfers, a baseball player and a tennis player were joined by family and friends in the Eidson Gymnasium where they officially committed to their college of choice by signing a national letter of intent. Once an athlete has signed with a college, officials from other institutions are not allowed to actively recruit them.
“Today is possible because of the hard work of these students and the sacrifices they made for their sport so we are here to let them know we are proud of them,” Pinewood Athletic Director Nancy Beatty said. “But we are also witnessing what these families have invested into their children and into Pinewood so I would like to thank them.”
Katelyn Dambaugh, who led Pinewood to three state girls’ golf championships and was a member of the 2011 Panther boys’ team that claimed a state title, signed with the University of South Carolina golf program. Fellow Panther golfer Richard Hubbard, a member of three Pinewood boys’ state championship teams, signed with the University of Wisconsin golf program.
A trio of seniors who helped the Lady Panthers basketball team earn back-to-back state titles the past two seasons announced their college plans. Raygon Hendrix signed with the United States Air Force Academy; Maria Corella signed with Wofford College; and Jenifer Rhodes signed with Elon College.
JD Waite, a major contributor on the first two Pinewood baseball teams to win a state title, signed to play for Lander College.
Joel Roberts, a doubles state champion who has held a state Top 10 ranking for his division throughout his career, signed with the Presbyterian College tennis program.
