The Pinewood Western Equestrian riders competed last weekend at the Palmetto Classic hosted by Hammond, Wilson Hall and Central Carolina Equestrian team.
Three separate meets were held over two days in Camden at the South Carolina Equine Park with Pinewood winning Sunday’s Meet.
Senior Kara Guertin was the High Point Varsity Open Rider for Saturday and Sunday. Hanna Givens was awarded the sportsmanship award for the Saturday morning meet and Kara Guertin was awarded the sportsmanship award for the Saturday afternoon meet. The Sportsmanship award is given to an individual chosen by the show officials that exemplifies outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship.
Teams and riders ride to earn points in several events over the course of the season in order to qualify for Zone finals and Nationals. Seniors Ali Clynes Schmieding and Kara Guertin have both qualified already for the Zone Finals in their horsemanship divisions. Other members of the Pinewood team that competed over the weekend were Elizabeth Soyka and Aurie Engel Schmieding.
Pinewood will be hosting two IEA Western equestrian shows in February on Johns Island. Zone Finals are April 6-7 in Braselton, Ga. and National Finals are June 27-29 in Oklahoma City.
