Former Fort Dorchester standout Mike Sellers has received some high Southern Conference honors.
Sellers, a junior at The Citadel, and head Bulldog football coach Kevin Higgins were selected this month as individual award winners by the head coaches and media covering the Southern Conference.
Sellers received the Jacobs Blocking Award and was the lone Bulldog named to the all-conference first team while Higgins was chosen the Wallace Wade Coach of the Year by the media and shared the honor with Samford's Pat Sullivan in the coaches' balloting.
Sellers (Summerville, S.C.) is on the all-conference first team for the second straight season and became the first Bulldog to receive the Jacobs Blocking Award for the Southern Conference although Carlos Avalos won the award presented to a player from the state of South Carolina in 1988.
Sellers has started the past 22 games at center after originally coming to The Citadel as a defensive lineman. This season he anchored an offensive line that enabled the Bulldogs to rush for an average of 300.6 yards per game, the fourth-highest mark in the nation, while allowing only two sacks on the year.
He led the Bulldogs with 75 knockdown blocks and earned the highest assignment grade of all Citadel offensive linemen this season. A year ago Sellers was the team's offensive MVP and is a candidate for All-America honors this season.
