Foxes capture crown, gain confidence

A meat grinder.
The gauntlet.
It’s what awaits Ashley Ridge’s wrestling team over the next couple of weeks, Foxes coach Stacey Woods said.
But his team enters the tough stretch with some momentum.
“We don’t have any easy matches this month,” said Woods, whose team captured the team trophy in the annual Hawk Invitational at Hanahan High School on Saturday. “We just had Summerville last week and we’ve got Fort (this week). Then we turn around and get to wrestle Bluffton, Stratford and Beaufort… Maybe coming away from here with a victory helps give our kids the confidence to fight and not roll over.”
The Foxes placed six grapplers in the finals, winning two individual championships. Christian Cuttino won the title at 126 pounds and Tyler Moore was the top man at 195 pounds.
Ben Whitney (106), Terrell Robinson (138), Zack Armstrong (170) and Joseph Pringle (182) tacked on runner-up finishes for the Foxes.
In all, they trumped 22 other teams for the crown.
“It was a great tournament,” Woods said. “The kids fought. We’ve been here the last three out of five years and it’s good for our kids. It gets them some quality wrestling and some quality mat time.”
The Foxes finished with 178.5 points and topped second place Socastee that had 153.5 points. Bluffton was third with 125 points, followed by host Hanahan with 122.5. Hilton Head was fifth with 111.5 points.
Waccamaw was the only other team to top the 100-point mark, finishing sixth with 106 points.
Edisto (99), Cane Bay (97), Battery Creek (93) and Goose Creek (81) rounded out the top 10.
Along with Ashley Ridge, Socastee, Bluffton and Waccamaw had two first-place finishers in weight divisions.
Hanahan, Hilton Head, Edisto, Cane Bay, Battery Creek and Bishop England each had one winner.
Hanahan’s Dennis Flores (170), Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy (182) and Bishop England’s Malcom Nazon (220) were also local winners.
Flores was named the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament between classes 152 and heavyweight.
