The Green Wave wrestling team held its own last weekend during a tournament featuring teams from four states.
Without its full lineup of starters, Summerville placed seventh out of 42 teams during the ninth annual Southern Slam Invitational held at Eastside High School in Taylors.
Archer High School repeated as tournament champion after tallying 289 points. It was one of three teams from Georgia to finish in the Top 5. Lexington (178.5) and Eastside (151) placed second and fourth and Rock Hill (123) also placed in front of Summerville (119). Beaufort (115) finished eighth.
Teams from Virginia and North Carolina also participated.
“This is one of the toughest tournaments we go to each year,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “There are no easy matches there so it is a good test early in the season that can give you an idea where your team is.”
Summerville’s Gavin Perkins earned a 5-1 decision in the finals to claim the tournament championship for the 126-pound weight division. Green Wave grappler Chad Wood placed second in the 152-pound division after being edged out in the finals, falling by a 5-4 decision to an Archer wrestler.
James Sass placed fourth at 106 and Adam Blocker placed eighth at 195.
