Fort Dorchester took a seemingly comfortable 28-7 lead into the fourth quarter Friday night, then watched as Cane Bay battled back to send the game into overtime.
But Fort Dorchester survived as Daitwan Commodore scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard run in the first overtime for a 34-28 victory.
Fort Dorchester quarterback Baptiste Staggers passed for 235 yards and senior receiver T. J. Smith had four catches for 123 yards, scoring once and setting up two other scores in the first half.
“Heck, we didn't stop playing there in the fourth quarter, but Cane Bay didn't stop playing either,” said relieved Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad. “We had it in hand and Cane Bay just fought their way back into it. We should have put the game away and we didn't.”
Fort Dorchester (2-0) took a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard pass from Staggers to Smith on a fourth-down play with 5:08 left in the opening quarter.
Staggers added a 1-yard plunge with 7:05 remaining in the second quarter. Cane Bay answered with Davon Higgins' 1-yard run with 3:18 left, cutting the margin to 14-7.
The Patriots added a late score just before the half, set up by the long pass from Staggers to Smith to the 1-yard line. Fort Dorchester's 330-pound sophomore defensive tackle Eundras Bryant scored on a 1-yard run with 22 seconds left in the half for a 21-7 lead at the break.
The Patriots stretched the lead to 28-7 late in the third quarter when, faced with a third-and-21 from the Cane Bay 45, Staggers lofted a pass to Rashard Palmer, who juggled a tipped throw three times before gaining control and racing to the end zone with 2:45 to play in the third.
Cane Bay's rally in the fourth quarter began on Devin Kilgore's 66-yard keeper with 11:41 to play. Kilgore finished with 104 yards passing and 66 net yards rushing.
On its next possession, Cane Bay executed a fake punt as Higgins raced 44 yards to the Fort Dorchester 6-yard line. Ramonte Frazier scored on the next play, cutting the lead to 28-20 with 8:05 remaining.
After forcing a 17-yard punt on the next series, Cane Bay took over at the Fort Dorchester 35-yard line. On third-and-12, Kilgore found Maurice Wesley for a 37-yard touchdown pass, and then tied the score on a two-point conversion pass to Higgins with 5:20 to play.
