. . .so Board Chairman Bill Everett referred to Marlena Myers as he called for a round of applause for the Scrumptious Kitchen Tour’s guiding light at the celebration of its first decade. The occasion was last Saturday night’s Sponsor’s Gala and Auction at Bud and Peggy Knight’s Party Barn, benefiting the Dorchester Children’s Center.
Noting that he expected Marlena to “be good for another 10 years,” Bill went on to present the premier accolade of the evening, the Bert Cicenia Award, to Ralph Phillips. Bill said Ralph raised between $150,000 and $180,000 over the years, making him responsible for 10 percent of the fundraising budget. This caused Bill to quip that, “Ralph’s wife Kay, (Children in Crisis executive director), told me that Ralph’s friends “cross the street when they see him coming!”
More applause. More laughter. More fun – and more fund raising via the silent and live auctions, ably conducted by Master of Ceremonies, Al Bradham, became the order of the evening. Fund Development Director Bob Ingram said there were over 300 Gala guests and the auctions were very successful with “some folks getting some real bargains.” Jim Hamilton, who with his wife Lisa, had their home on tour the next day, said that the event really brought the community together. He then joined in the witty gaiety by commenting that he “can’t wait until next year’s Kitchen Tour, especially with it being in someone else’s house!”
Bob said that all the chefs from both the Gala and the next day’s Kitchen Tour have already asked to come back next year. What good news for local epicures who really appreciate things such as Pimento cheese Biscuits and Prosciutto, and Sweet Potato & Goat Cheese Ravioli with Sage Brown Butter; Fried Cinnamon Pasta with Fresh Ricotta & Berries.
“That ravioli was absolutely delicious,” said guest Susan Bohm, who with her husband Frank attended their first Gala. “The food was splendid,” agreed Frank, “and the servers and chefs more than accommodating in telling us about the food – adding to the pleasure. It was just very nicely put together.”
Susan said it was wonderful to see people elegantly clad for the occasion. “Most times nowadays you go out and it’s so casual, maybe a pair of dress slacks,” but Saturday night was a feast for the eyes as well, she said. “The men looked so handsome and it was such fun seeing all the cocktail fashions the ladies wore!” This year’s theme was Fire & Ice and attendees were encouraged to wear red or blue to add to the festivities. All those delightful styles also looked natty on the dance floor as guests enjoyed the mellow tunes – and tones – of Robert Pratt and his Palmetto Dance Band.
Marlena said earlier this week that it was a tremendous success because the efforts of everyone came together to make it all happen: the Golf Tournament, the Gala, the Kitchen Tour, and the weather – it just couldn’t have been better.”
The old children’s tale of that too-little blue engine repeating its motto of “I-think-I-can” and successfully pulling the too-long train over the too-high mountain teaches the value of optimism and hard work to adults alike.
Perhaps its updated title should now be “The Little Engine That Did!”
