Patriots to host Swamp Foxes for Thursday Night Lights

  • Tuesday, October 30, 2012

The Patriots and Swamp Foxes square off Thursday for a game that will give one of them the advantage in the series.
The teams have played on the gridiron twice with Fort Dorchester taking the first meeting and Ashley Ridge winning the rematch last season. The Patriots have a lot to gain as they enter the game with a 5-5 record and a 2-2 mark in Region 8-AAAA. With a victory they can finish the regular season with a winning record and bolster their chances at receiving a favorable playoff seeding.
The Swamp Foxes will enter with a 3-7 record and 2-2 mark in the region so they are looking simply to finish the regular season on a good note by proving they are better than their record.
Playing on Thursday night brings unique challenges, but also some benefits.
“I would rather play on Friday, but it’s good for the kids to get to play on TV,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “I’m sure there will be a good crowd there as well.”
Kickoff for the game, which will air on My TV Charleston’s Thursday Night Lights, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Fort Dorchester.
Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker says he has a lot of respect for the Fort Dorchester coaching staff and this year’s Patriot team. However, he is looking for a little redemption after falling to another crosstown rival last week, Summerville.
“The short week doesn’t bother us too much because we have done it quite a bit over the last couple of years,” Walker said. “We started breaking down film earlier and practice will go a bit longer this week because the kids need to absorb the plan a lot quicker. However, we will probably keep things simpler for them.”
The Patriots are coming off a convincing win over Beaufort.
The teams share wins over West Ashley, Colleton County and Beaufort. They share losses to Goose Creek, Wando, Stratford, Summerville and Bluffton.
“One thing about Ashley Ridge is they have improved up front on both sides of the ball as the season has moved along,” LaPrad said. “Plus they have good skill guys and I’m sure they will play Thursday as if it were for a state championship.”
