Dr. Christopher Kestner helped treat Blue Devil basketball players during his foot and ankle fellowship with the Duke University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. That impresses Duke fans, he admits, but not necessarily rival University of North Carolina fans. More importantly, Dr. Kestner learned the techniques of total ankle replacement, which can resolve damage from trauma and arthritis, from top experts while at Duke. Dr. Kestner was drawn to orthopedics by his sports background – he played baseball beyond college – and by the potential to help others in a dramatic way. “I remember one patient who said, ‘You’ve given me my life back. I can go for walks again. I can dance with my husband,’” says Dr. Kestner, who now practices with South Carolina Sports Medicine in North Charleston. “I remember one patient who said, ‘You’ve given me my life back.
