More lights possible for Brownsville

  • Monday, January 14, 2013

Summerville’s public works committee agreed to cover the $331 per month cost to add 16 new streetlights to the Brownsville area.
Town Council has final approval.
The committee began looking at streetlights in the area last fall at Councilman Aaron Brown’s request. A staff survey found the neighborhood didn’t meet the ratios of lights-to-houses called for in the town’s ordinance.
Town Engineer Russ Cornette said staff went out Dec. 12 and found 10 lights that weren’t working.
SCE&G was asked to repair those, he said.
The staff also found areas that were too dark and had no lights, he said. Sixteen lights could be installed on existing power poles, he said.
Staff also looked at the Oakbrook neighborhood, which also has some very dark areas, Cornette said.
In Oakbrook, however, poles would have to be installed in addition to lights, he said.
