Superintendent Joe Pye, left, Principal Donna Goodwin and other faculty and staff decked themselves in blue and got on the roof of Flowertown Elementary School to announce to students and teachers the school had been nominated for a National Blue Ribbon award.

Teachers and students at Flowertown Elementary School learned Friday their school has been nominated to be a National Blue Ribbon School. The blue ribbon program recognizes schools that are academically superior or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. States are limited in the number of schools they can nominate. South Carolina nominated four elementary schools and one high school. Dorchester School District 2 has previously had two schools that earned blue ribbon status, Summerville Elementary and Oakbrook Elementary, but that was in the mid-1990s. Now that itís nominated, Flowertown must complete an extensive application process. It should get word next fall on whether it receives the blue ribbon distinction.
