Swamp Foxes dole out awards

A pair of linebackers and a running back garnered some of the top honors handed out by the Swamp Fox football program Monday night.
Varsity letters as well as awards for team superlatives were handed out during the 2012 Ashley Ridge High School Football Awards Ceremony and banquet held at the school.
Senior linebacker Jackson Plyler received the Coaches Award, the only team superlative voted on by the program’s coaches rather than its athletes.
“The Coaches Award goes to the player who we feel best represents the character and attitude we expect from our players both on the field and in the locker room,” said assistant coach Ray Wilson, who presented the award. “Jackson has battled with injury the past two years but he was very serious about his rehab. He has a great respect for the game as well as his teammates.”
Plyler made 49 tackles in the first five games this year but then an injury ended his season.
The team’s Offensive MVP Award went to four-year starter Romelo Doctor, who finishes his high school career with 5,045 rushing yards and 59 touchdowns. This season the tailback rushed for 1,450 yards, scored 20 TDs and was selected for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game.
The team’s Defensive MVP Award was presented to senior linebacker Tray Cutler. A two-year starter, Cutler had the 300-career tackles benchmark in his site, but fell short of achieving it.
During his senior season, Cutler made 92 tackles, including two sacks. He also had an interception.
Coaches also presented academic awards to the team’s upperclassmen who have the best GPAs. Junior academic awards went to Michael Marshall, Jordan Freund, Wyatt Livingston, Thomas Cooper and Tyler Moore. Senior academic awards went to Zach Armstrong, Jalaan Avritte, Cameron Smith, Brian Nix and Jackson Plyler.
