Tucker named Green Wave MVP

  • Monday, January 14, 2013

Senior running back Jerod Tucker was named the 2012 MVP for the Green Wave varsity football team Monday night.
Summerville High School held its annual Football Banquet to honor football players, cheerleaders and student trainers for their contributions to the Green Wave football program. Varsity letters as well as several awards for team superlatives were handed out during the event.
The most prestigious award went to Tucker, a three-year letterman for the varsity team.
“He is a very well-rounded back,” Summerville coach John McKissick said of Tucker. “He runs well; he can catch the ball and he blocks as good as any running back we’ve ever had.”
Tucker lined up as a fullback for much of the season but also played tailback. During a stint in which Davon Anderson was out with an injury Tucker had some huge games as the tailback.
Tucker carried the ball 157 times this season to gain 987 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. That puts him second on the team in both categories behind Anderson.
Tucker also made 16 receptions for 251 yards and two TDs.
The senior capped his high school football career by playing in the North-South All-star game last Saturday. He went out with style, breaking free for a 78-yard TD run in front of a large group of fans and college scouts.
