The Lady Wolverines avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Patriots by earning a 36-29 victory over Fort Dorchester Friday.
Woodland only held a one-point lead at the end of the first period, but opened the second by scoring six unanswered points. The Wolverines went on to outscore the Patriots 14-5 in the period, which was the difference in the game.
The Fort outscored Woodland 8-7 in the third and 11-9 in the fourth, but Woodland managed to score points off breaks and hit free throws to prevent the Patriots from closing the gap enough.
“We hustled tonight and played excellent defense,” Woodland coach Tracy Delee said. “Good, hard defense wins games so I’m very pleased with my team. Beating a 4-A school gives us a lot of motivation going into region play next week.”
Tasia Hopkins led all scorers with 13 points. Both Jonetta Cobb and Keddryona Warren chipped in eight points for Woodland, which earned its first victory of the season up against three losses.
Erika Martin led the Fort scorers with eight points and Shamari Jones chipped in six for the Patriots, which return to action Wednesday at Goose Creek. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
