Green Wave grapplers notch big win

Summerville hosted a wrestling match between a pair of Top 5 teams Monday.
The Green Wave, the fourth ranked Class AAAA team in the South Carolina coaches' poll released Jan. 9, earned a 36-31 victory over fifth-ranked Beaufort.
The Eagles got off to a strong start, earning wins in the first three weight classes to take a 16-0 lead. Wrestling started in the 197-pound class, where Clint Wright earned a major decision. Tyler Wilson followed with a win by pin fall at 222 and Kentrell Seabrook pinned his heavyweight opponent.
However, Summerville won eight of the next nine weight classes to claim a 36-19 lead. With the victory secured, Summerville forfeited the final two bouts.
“That was a great team effort,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “We had some younger guys step up and pick up some huge wins for us. Justin Connelly getting a pin got us rolling.  He came in and wrestled hard and beat a pretty good kid.  We also had the fortune of getting the flip so in a few key weights, they had to send their guy out first.  Beaufort is a very quality opponent and we were fortunate to beat a good team like that. I am proud of how my guys stayed composed and fought back from a 16-0 deficit to get in the match.”
Summerville started turning things around at 108 with an 8-4 decision by James Sass. The Wave run included pins by Justin Connelly (115-pound class), Tyler Fachko (122) and Daniel Smith (140) as well as decisions by Marc Templeton (128), Anthony Collins (154) and Chad Wood (162). Gavin Perkins received a win by forfeit at 134.
Summerville improved to 15-2 on the season with a 3-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win. The Wave wraps up its region schedule with a match at Colleton County Jan. 16 and a home match with Fort Dorchester Jan. 23.
