The Green Wave boys finished strong Friday to earn a 65-52 win in The Swamp.
“That was a high-octane basketball game,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “I thought both teams played extremely well and hard. We got down (several points) in the third quarter and Xavier Robinson sparked us with a couple of steals and layups and all the sudden we were up 8. In the fourth period we got a couple of easy baskets and a few and-ones and did a good job of hitting our free throws. Both teams played at a high level, we just made a few more shots toward the end and then they had to start fouling and throwing up some 3s.”
Nearly half of Summerville’s points came at the free-throw line. Brandon Wilkerson paced the Green Wave, hitting 12 free throws and finishing with a game-high 22 points. Summerville junior John Jenkins only scored two points in the first half, but scored 13 in the second half. Robinson, also a junior, finished with 10 points for a new career high.
Nearly half of the Ashley Ridge points came on three-pointers as D.J. Stevens, Fred Weeks and Romelo Doctor all hit multiple shots from beyond the arc. Stevens and Weeks finished with 14 points each while Doctor finished with 12.
Ashley Ridge (11-6, 2-2 in Region 8-AAAA) outscored Summerville (14-4, 4-0) by a 30-28 margin in the first half, but the Wave outscored the Swamp Foxes 37-22 in the second half.
Wilkerson scored six points early to push Summerville out to an 8-2 lead, but Stevens and Doctor hit a pair of 3s to tie the game. The Swamp Foxes claimed a one-point lead off another 3 and were looking to extend that lead after a Wave turnover. However, Robinson deflected an Ashley Ridge in-bound pass and Chris McKinnon grabbed the ball. He passed back inside to Robinson, who hit a buzzer-beater for a 16-15 Summerville lead at the end of the opening period.
Stevens, Doctor and Malik Graham came up big offensively for Ashley Ridge in the second period and the Swamp Foxes took a 30-28 lead into the half.
Doctor opened the third period with a 3 that Stevens followed with a steal that resulted in a pair of free throws and a 35-28 Ashley Ridge lead with 6:59 remaining in the period.
But Robinson and Wilkerson teamed up to do a lot of damage for Summerville in the next three minutes of play and Jenkins hit some big free throws toward the end of the period to give the Wave a 48-40 advantage entering the final period.
Ashley Ridge cut the lead to 5 early in the fourth, but then Summerville did a good job of being patient on offense and working the ball inside.
“Once we got up 8 we wanted to attack the rim and make them chase us because we are a pretty good free-throw shooting team,” Elliott said. “I think this is the best team Ashley Ridge has had in the four years since I’ve been here. I saw them play early in the season without Doctor and they scared me then and of course Doctor is a great player so we feel fortunate to come out of their place with a win.”
Both teams will play on the road Friday. Ashley Ridge travels to Bluffton for a rematch while Summerville travels to Colleton County.
