The Lady Green Wave basketball team handed the Lady Swamp Foxes their first region loss Friday.
Summerville (13-5, 4-0 in Region 8-AAAA) broke open a game at The Swamp in the second quarter and then held off Ashley Ridge (7-6, 3-1) to earn a 48-33 victory.
“We were expecting a really tight game,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “Coach Shaw is doing a good job here and they are a really good team. I'm proud of the way we battled and thought we played well on the road.”
Summerville capitalized on some turnovers and received a three-pointer from junior Kwanza Murray in the first period to take an 8-7 lead. Early in the second period, the Lady Wave hit six free throws and received a 3 from senior Tinara Brown to gain a 17-7 advantage. Ashley Ridge then matched Summerville's effort the remainder of the period to enter the half down 20-10.
Rodnesha Capers and Zuri Green opened the third period by sinking back-to-back shots from behind the arc to extend the Summerville lead to 16.
Ashley Ridge managed to cut the lead to 9 early in the fourth period, but Summerville didn't allow the Lady Foxes to get any closer.
“We thought we would be able to press them a little more,” Legare said. “Our press was effective to an extent but our half-court defense is what was really big tonight. We also got some good bench play, some key rebounds and some big shots when we needed them.”
Murray had a game-high 15 points while Capers, Green, Brown and Heather Chapman all chipped in six points for Summerville. Ashley Tierney led Ashley Ridge with nine points while Ariel Glover and Olivia Baum both added six points for the Lady Swamp Foxes.
Summerville travels to Colleton County Friday while Ashley Ridge travels to Bluffton.
