SC Senator Larry Grooms Announces Campaign For Congress
South Carolina State Senator Larry Grooms announced last week his bid for South Carolina's First Congressional District.
“Washington is threatening our jobs, our families and our way of life. Now more than ever we need a strong, principled conservative who will fight against Washington's high taxes, endless debt, and constant attacks on our freedom. I have fought for you in the South Carolina Senate. You know where I stand. You know I will fight for you in Washington.”
The Lowcountry conservative spoke to an enthusiastic group of supporters at Scout Boats' manufacturing facility in Summerville.
“Washington spending is out of control. Our national debt is now over $16 trillion, and Washington just raised taxes on 77 percent of Americans. The tax penalties, mandates and regulations from Obamacare are destroying small businesses.
“If we do not stand up and fight, we leave a terrible legacy for our children – a legacy of endless debt, a lower standard of living and an ever-intrusive federal government. I will not let that happen, even if it means standing up to the leadership of my own party.”
Grooms married his college sweetheart, Carol, nearly 25 years ago and they have three sons. Grooms started a small business – a gas station and convenience store in Saint Stephen – while he was in his twenties and went on to own a small chain of convenience stores and restaurants in the Lowcountry. Grooms was first elected to the Senate in 1997 and represents portions of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.
“But even as we fight, don't let people tell you that we can't accomplish meaningful reform. Over my career, I have proven that the best way to get things done isn't through back-room deals, vote-trading or capitulation. It's about standing on principle. My record of conservative accomplishment is based on a simple premise: If people know where you stand and trust your word, they'll work with you.”
Senator Grooms was recently named the Champion of Free Enterprise by the South Carolina Business and Industry Political Education Committee and the Legislator of the Year by the South Carolina Citizens for Life. He has received dozens of leadership awards over the years, including the 100 percent Business Advocate Award from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; the Senate Legislative Champion Award (for outstanding leadership in the defense of faith, family, and freedom) from the Palmetto Family Council; the Taxpayer Champion Award from the Club For Growth; and the Friend to the Taxpayer Award from the South Carolina Association of Taxpayers.
