A second-period blitz gave the Summerville girls all the momentum they needed Tuesday against Fort Dorchester.
The Lady Patriots finished the opening period strong, getting a pair of buckets from both Erika Martin and Desiree Evans to cut a Summerville lead down to five points. Then the Lady Green Wave stunned the Fort with a barrage of takeaways during a 16-0 run. Summerville took a 44-23 lead into the half en route to a 66-37 victory at home.
“We played really well, especially in the second quarter,” Summerville junior Kwanza Murray said. “We moved around well and played as a team and with intensity.”
The Lady Patriots regrouped at the half and tried to use their size to their advantage in the third period but they just couldn’t stop the Wave from rolling.
“One of the keys is we had all 12 players available for the first time this year,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “Another key is we committed to pushing the tempo and playing pressure defense, and it all just clicked. Our level of effort and execution from the bench allowed us to play at a high tempo and still stay fresh. Fort Dorchester has a big upside and they will be tough to beat at their place, so we’re not taking this win for granted.”
Summerville improved to 14-5 on the season with a 5-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win at the halfway mark of its region schedule. Fort Dorchester dropped to 4-11 with a 2-3 mark in region play.
Murray led the Wave effort, posting a game-high 23 points. Zuri Green added 10 points for Summerville, which had eight other players score. Ashley Green, in her first game back from an injury, was one of three Summerville players to score six points.
Martin led the Lady Patriots with 12 points while Briana Chisolm added 10. Four other Fort players also sank shots.
Summerville travels to Colleton County Jan. 25 while Fort Dorchester travels to Beaufort.
