Jenkins leads Green Wave boys past rival
The Summerville boys found Fort Dorchester's “super aggressive” style of play hard to handle, but managed it well enough in the fourth period Tuesday to squeak out a win.
Neither team was able to ever really seize momentum in the game. However, the Green Wave outscored the Patriots 20-13 in the final period to claim a 63-58 win at home over a team Summerville coach Greg Elliott describes as super aggressive and hard to cover.
“The first half we had 11 turnovers and they got 12 points off them,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “They had nine offensive rebounds that resulted in 10 more points. In the second half we battled back, got into the bonus and hit some free throws towards the end. They are very athletic and their press bothered us. We made some bad passes and bad decisions, but didn't turn the ball over as much in the second half and made some big plays down the stretch.”
Summerville improved to 15-4 on the season with a 5-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA at the halfway mark for the region schedule. Fort Dorchester dropped to 10-6 and 2-3 in the region, but Patriot coach Leon Wheaton said he is proud of his team's effort.
“To be on the road we played pretty good collectively,” Wheaton said. “We had a lot of young guys out there who played well but some calls didn't go our way, we didn't protect the ball as well as we should and we came up just a little short. This is a loss, but we are going to take it and build on it. We need to keep playing with the energy we had tonight. We don't control our own destiny now, but we plan to see it through and see what happens.”
Junior John Jenkins led the Summerville offense with 16 points on the night. Christian Kalacanic added 14 points for the Wave while Brandon Wilkerson chipped in 12.
Sophomore Eric Heyward led the Patriots, matching Jenkins' 16 points. Thad Middleton added nine for the Fort and Wayne Chisolm chipped in eight.
Demariez Moorer set the tone for the game, taking the tip from Baptiste Staggers and scoring with a quick layup. Summerville eventually pulled out to a six-point lead in the first period, but Heyward cut that lead in half when he made a steal and hit a three-pointer on the other end of the court. Two more Summerville turnovers resulted in a Patriot lead, but Chris McKinnon hit a jumper just before the buzzer for the period to take the score to 15-all.
With the help of a pair of 3s from Chisolm the Patriots pulled out to a five-point lead, but Summerville received baskets from Kalacanic and Jenkins to cut the lead to a point entering the half. The Fort took a 45-43 advantage into the final period and went up by four points with a three-pointer from Moorer with 4:35 remaining. However, the Pats were unable to land a knockout blow.
After a Patriot turnover, Summerville took the lead on an Xavier Robinson basket with 4:07 remaining. In the final three minutes, the Wave picked up its tempo and made some big shots. Wilkerson and Jenkins both hit a pair of free throws inside the two-minute mark for an eight-point Summerville lead.
The Fort cut that lead in half, but then yielded a free throw and ran out of time.
Summerville travels to Colleton County Jan. 25 while Fort Dorchester travels to Beaufort. The rematch between the teams is scheduled for Feb. 8 at Fort Dorchester and will be the regular-season finale for both.
