Patriots put Knights in check
The Fort Dorchester Hockey Club remains in first place for the South Carolina Scholastic Hockey Association after defeating Stratford Friday.
The Patriots defeated the Knights 7-2 at the Carolina Ice Palace to improve their record to 9-2 on the season. The Knights fell to 6-4 on the season and are in fourth place in the standings behind Fort Dorchester, BE/PG and Greenville North.
Halfway through the opening period Fort Dorchester’s Justin LeBlanc had a shot deflected and Julian DiPaolo was in front of the goal to get a second shot past the Stratford keeper for a 1-0 Patriot lead.
Less than a minute later Chandler Murphy took the puck deep in Patriot territory, skated past a pair of defenders and put a nice move on the Stratford keeper to double the Fort’s lead. Patrick McCardle received an assist on the play.
Early in the second period McCardle scored with an assist by Zack Potter and Murphy scored with an assist from Danny Rowland for a 4-0 Fort lead.
Stratford then scored the next two goals for a 4-2 score at the end of the second period. Madison Ellis scored at the 7:42 mark with an assist from Jonathan Busolin and then Busolin scored at the 4:04 mark with an assist from Dylan Sides.
However, the Patriots were stingy on defense in the final period and scored three goals in the final three minutes of play to secure the victory. Rowland kicked off the Patriot scoring frenzy with 3:03 remaining and Potter took the score to 7-2 with a goal with 2:38 remaining. Murphy, LeBlanc, Brandon Doss, Rowland and McCardle all received an assist during the frenzy.
On Friday, Fort Dorchester takes on Greenville South at 9 p.m. while Stratford takes on Summerville at 6 p.m. Both games will be at the Carolina Ice Palace.
