Both Green Wave basketball teams have cracked the state’s Top 10 rankings.
After a 61-47 win at Colleton County Friday, the Summerville girls enter play this week ranked 10th in the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Class AAAA Girls’ poll. Colleton began the season as the seventh-ranked team for the division, but Summerville has now defeated the Lady Cougars twice this season.
As was the case when the teams first met, Friday’s rematch was thrilling.
“It was a great high school basketball game,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “The atmosphere was high energy and both teams played with a lot of heart and effort. Overall, I think our depth helped us outlast a very good team on the road. I’m about as proud as I've ever been of a group of kids. Hopefully we can continue with that kind of effort and determination throughout the rest of the year.”
Colleton jumped out to an 18-11 lead but then Zuri Green and Kwanza Murray sparked a series of fast breaks that resulted in an 8-0 Summerville run early in the second period.
In the third period, Jakaylah Ravanell came off the bench to provide some big minutes that helped Summerville keep pace with the Cougars. The senior converted a steal into a layup and hit two big jumpers in the period.
The turning point in the game came midway through the fourth when junior Heather Chapman made a couple of three-point plays the old fashioned way. First, she took a rebound coast to coast, making a layup and ensuing free throw after being fouled on her way to the basket. A possession later, she converted an offensive rebound into a putback and free throw to give Summerville a three-point lead.
Ashley Green, Murray and Tinara Brown all made free throws in the final minute to help preserve the victory.
Murray and Chapman both finished with 14 points on the night while Zuri Green had 12. Summerville improved to 16-4 on the season with a 6-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win. Colleton fell to 16-3, 4-2.
After cracking the Top 10 earlier this month, on Monday the Summerville boys jumped up to the No. 8 spot in the Class AAAA poll. They earned a 66-47 win over Colleton Friday to improve to 16-4 on the season with a 6-0 mark in region play and can clinch the top playoff seeding for the region with a pair of victories this week. The Cougars fell to 4-10, 0-5.
The Green Wave was led by John Jenkins and Brandon Wilkerson, who both scored 22 points. Kelvon Bellinger, Timmy Singleton, Chris McKinnon, Xavier Robinson, Isaiah Kinloch and Christian Kalacanic also scored for Summerville.
Colleton was led by Latrell Niezes with 16 points and Hasin Nichols with 12.
The Cougars jumped out to an 18-16 lead at the end of the first period, but Summerville then outscored Colleton in each of the remaining periods. In the fourth, Summerville scored 25 while holding Colleton to 14.
The Summerville teams travel to Bluffton Friday.
