County buying land from town
Dorchester County is negotiating with Summerville to buy land next to the Waring Fire Station on Old Trolley Road to build a new EMS station.
The county’s EMS staff currently shares space with the town firefighters, but the building doesn’t meet accreditation standards, EMS Director Doug Warren has told council.
He told members during budget talks in 2012 that moving the Old Trolley Road station was his No. 1 priority.
Among the problems at the Waring station is the lack of separate facilities for men and women.
Administrator Jason Ward said Mayor Bill Collins is willing to subdivide the land on which the fire station sits so the county can buy and build its own station.
“That is one of our busiest medic areas,” he said.
Price is still being negotiated. The county has some funds in its capital improvement plan for the current fiscal year, Ward said, but he would return to council for approval of the final sales price.
