Lady Green Wave clinches title with win over AR
The Summerville girls’ basketball team ran away with its game against Ashley Ridge Tuesday to capture the Region 8-AAAA championship.
The Lady Swamp Foxes seemed to be a good match for the Lady Green Wave early in the game as they trailed Summerville by only four points after the first period. After that, Ashley Ridge had trouble keeping up with Summerville’s high-pressure, fast-paced style.
Summerville outscored Ashley Ridge 16-9 in the second period and 20-3 in the third en route to a 56-29 victory that clinched the Lady Green Wave its second region championship in the past three seasons.
“Our girls have been tough and stuck together this season,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “We had a lot of unexpected things happen this year, but that forced them to come together and helped us develop good depth which helped us out. This is the deepest team I’ve had since I took over the program and probably the most talented.”
Shelby Daly gave Ashley Ridge fans hope by scoring in the paint to open the third period. However, Zuri Green then put the dagger in that hope by hitting consecutive three-point shots and going inside for a bucket that gave Summerville a 36-19 advantage. The Foxes managed only a sole free throw the rest of the period, which Summerville’s Rodnesha Capers closed by scoring six unanswered points.
In the final period, Summerville focused mostly on burning the clock and getting players from the bench minutes.
Junior Kwanza Murray led all scorers with 15 points. Zuri Green finished with 14 and Capers with 11. Ashley Tierney led Ashley Ridge with seven points and Ariel Glover had six.
Summerville improved to 18-5 on the season with a 9-0 mark in the region while Ashley Ridge fell to 11-8, 6-3.
The Wave wrapped up its regular season on Thursday with a game at Fort Dorchester after press time and will have home-court advantage through the first three rounds of the playoffs, which begin Tuesday evening.
“We still have goals we want to achieve,” Legare said. “We want to win at least 20 games and we want to go undefeated in the region.”
Ashley Ridge travels to Colleton County tonight looking to bolster its playoff seeding. If the Foxes pull out an upset and the tiebreaker rules work in their favor they could open the playoffs at home. Otherwise they will be on the road Tuesday.
