Swamp Foxes fall in Walterboro
The season ended in Walterboro Friday for one Ashley Ridge basketball team but the other survived to fight another day.
The Swamp Fox boys were eliminated from playoff contention with a 56-49 loss to Colleton County in the final regular season game of the year. With the loss, Ashley Ridge dropped to 12-11 on the season with a 3-7 mark in region play. Beaufort finished with a 4-6 mark in the region to secure the region’s fourth and final playoff berth. Colleton County (6-17, 2-8) also failed to make the playoffs.
DJ Stevens posted a game-high 22 points in his final game wearing a Swamp Fox uniform, but it wasn’t enough to push Ashley Ridge over the Cougars. Sean White added nine points for Ashley Ridge and Fred Weeks added seven.
Rashee Hodges led Colleton with 17 points while Latrell Nieves added 15.
The Swamp Foxes were outscored in every period except the second when they put up 11 points to Colleton’s six to enter the half with an 18-16 lead.
The Ashley Ridge girls (11-9, 6-4) suffered a 52-19 loss to the Lady Cougars (20-3, 8-2) but still advanced to the playoffs as a No. 3 seed. The Lady Swamp Foxes opened the playoffs at Goose Creek Tuesday after press time. The winner of that game and the winner of the Dutch Fork/Irmo game will play in the second round Feb. 15.
Colleton County, the region runner-up, had three players score in double digits Friday. Brianna Chisolm led the way with 18 while Deyja Brown scored 14 and Courtney Eady added 11.
For Ashley Ridge, Olivia Baum, Shelby Daly and Kelly Cousins all scored five points and Ashley Tierney scored four.
