A break-in team who allegedly use a door-to-door sales approach to identify residences to break in and rob may be working the Summerville area.
The way the scam allegedly works is that one person approaches the front door and rings the doorbell. If someone answers the door, the doorbell ringer states that he or she is working for a service oriented company, such as a windshield repair company, and is checking to see if the resident needs the services of the company.
If no one answers, the doorbell ringer allegedly contacts a waiting accomplice via cellphone, who then breaks into the home.
Capt. Jon Rogers of the Summerville Police Department said Friday that the department has received no reports of any such activity recently, however, he acknowledged that criminals have used such approaches here in the past. Rogers also urged that if anyone believes they are witnessing such a criminal act or have been victimized, they should contact law enforcement at once.
