Dr. Alec DeCastro was drawn to medicine by his mother, a long-time psychiatrist for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. Once he finished his undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina, he headed to medical school in the Philippines, where his parents are originally from. “I had never been to the Philippines, so it was an opportunity to get in touch with my heritage and to do some missions work.” He connected with relatives, became more fluent in the Tagalog dialect and tackled medical challenges brought by tropical disease and poverty. Dr. DeCastro continued his education in the United States, spent five years in the U.S. Air Force and continues to serve with the Reserves as a flight surgeon out of the Charleston Air Force Base. He is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine and has experience in urgent care medicine, so he brings a wide range of expertise to Trident Family Health in North Charleston, where he is an attending physician. “Family medicine looks at the whole patient. It is a holistic concept.” - Alec DeCastro, MD Medical School: Our Lady of Fatima University, College of Medicine, Manila, Philippines Residency: McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence Fellowship: Sports Medicine, Southern Illinois University, Quincy
