SPS to host program on Drayton family

The Drayton family’s contributions to Summerville and South Carolina will be the topic of discussion at the Summerville Preservation Society’s meeting tomorrow night.
The society will hear presentations from Winslow Hastie, a current board member of the Historic Charleston Foundation and a descendant of the Drayton family, and Lisa Randle, Director of Research and Education at Magnolia Gardens.
The two guest speakers will address the significant contributions of the Drayton family, especially Rev. John Grimke Drayton, Rector of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. In addition, they will discuss the history of Drayton Hall and Magnolia Gardens as well as the importance of phosphate mining after the War Between the States.
Hastie and Randle will also discuss the Native American interest at Magnolia and the Drayton Family Connection to Summerville.
The program is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Old Town Hall, 201 W. Carolina Avenue, Summerville. Seating is limited. For more information call Heyward Hutson at 871-4276.
