Two Newington Elementary teachers won a dream honeymoon to Australia on Ellen on Monday.
Brad Emerton, a second-grade boys’ teacher, had entered a contest for the chance to travel Down Under, explaining what the trip would mean to him and Jennifer Balyeat, a fifth-grade English language arts teacher.
The two were invited to attend Thursday’s taping, but Emerton thought they were being invited merely to watch the show.
Instead, Ellen brought them onstage and gave them a Toyota Rav4 – because Emerton sold his car to finance their move to Summerville and Balyeat’s ring – and then further surprised them with the trip to Australia.
Emerton and Balyeat were back in Summerville by Monday, and watched the show with colleagues at Montreux Bar and Grill.
“I love this girl so much, and that’s the one thing I couldn’t give her was a honeymoon,” Emerton said.
The two are in their second year at Newington. They found Summerville when camping at Givhans Ferry State Park. They came into town for groceries and fell in love with the place.
Newington Principal Camilla Groome gave them a chance and they moved here from Florida.
“They’re a very sweet couple. It’s very exciting for them,” Groome said.
The two have been taking on second jobs to pay for their April wedding at Magnolia Plantation but didn’t have extra money to pay for a honeymoon.
