Sweet Magnolias” Bloom with Healthy Living
The “Sweet Magnolias” fifth grade girls from Flowertown Elementary School, experienced an afternoon of healthy living when guest speakers from around the community came to teach them about healthy eating, staying active and fit, and caring for their nails. Lucille Brown from the Oakbrook Publix brought a wide variety of fruits and parfaits for the girls to taste test.
Lucinda Hughes and Tracy Strickland from the YMCA at the Ponds had the girls excercising and stretching, discussing the keys to staying fit. Comelita Harriot and her staff from Charleston Cosmetology Institute taught the girls the importance of caring for their nails. They even treated the girls to a mini-manicure.
“Sometimes kids don’t think they have to be concerned with what they eat or exercising -- but we do,” fifth grader Bethany Crafton said.
The afternoon, organized by the Sweet Magnolias’ coordinator, Jody Gerhardt, emphasized to the girls that they can be responsible for their own health and well being.
