Goose Creek engineer wins CF Cupcake 5K
Runners and walkers from across the Lowcountry came together last weekend to support Gracie Rasner in her fight against Cystic Fibrosis.
The second annual CF Cupcake 5K Run/Walk held at William Reeves Elementary School Saturday morning drew more than 200 participants. All proceeds from the event go directly to the Gracie Rose Foundation, which was formed in an effort to assist Rasner with her current and future medical costs as well as to raise funds for the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Jared Chrysostom, an audio engineer and full-time college student from Goose Creek, crossed the finish line with a 17:46 time to set a new course record.
“That is one second off my (personal) best time,” Chrysostom said. “I did a 17:45 at the Turkey Day Run and placed like 15th there. I guess some recreational runners think I’m fast but in the bigger races the runners who are actually fast have already cooled down by the time I finish. I try not to get too competitive with it so it’s fun to come out for an event like this. It isn’t on the other side of town and it starts a little later in the day than most of the other races and that works for me.”
He says he started running just as a way to stay in shape, but now runs seven or eight races per year.
“One day I decided I would try a race and I placed well so I thought I should keep at it,” he said.
Greg Loftis finished Saturday’s 5K in 18:10 to claim runner-up honors and Tony Shuler placed third with a 19:40 time.

Each participant in the 5K and its accompanying one-mile fun run received a cupcake at the finish line as well as lunch from Logan's Roadhouse.
This year Garrett Haywood won the one-mile race with a 6:11 time. Sam Rasner (6:14) placed second and Jackson Evan (6:44) placed third.
