Ashley Ridge senior Christin Van Hoy has earned a scholarship from the Presbyterian College Cross Country Team.
On Friday Van Hoy was joined by family members and her high school coach for a signing celebration at the high school, where she announced she will join the Presbyterian team in the fall.
“I like that Presbyterian is a small school,” she said. “Everybody there is kind of like family. Everyone is helpful and nice and you aren’t just a number like at some of the bigger schools.”
Van Hoy is a four-time letterman for the Swamp Foxes who earned All-region honors twice and received All-Lowerstate honors last season when she ran a personal best 21:22 at the Lowerstate meet.
As a freshman, Van Hoy helped the Lady Swamp Fox team qualify for the Class AA state meet. As a sophomore and a junior she helped the Swamp Foxes qualify for the Class AAAA state meet.
She is also a member of the Health Occupation Students of America, National English Honors Society and National Science Honors Society.
“Christin’s academics, personality and hard work are what brought her to this point,” Ashley Ridge coach Christine Evans said. “If she continues to put in the work she will persevere at whatever she chooses to do.”
Van Hoy plans to major in biology and become a physician’s assistant. Athletically, she says she is hoping the Presbyterian coach will help her improve her times.
“I want to run in the sub-21 range, maybe even get into the 19s,” she said. “Their coach takes the time to get to know all his runners. He doesn’t seem to be interested only in their times so I think I’m going to like working with him.”
