Many of the Lowcountry’s top track and field athletes will compete at the Summerville High School track this weekend.
The 21st annual Outback Steakhouse Azalea Invitational Track and Field Meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday. Tickets for the daylong event are $5 at the gate.
“This meet has a history of outstanding performances,” meet director Steve Wilson said. “We’ve seen some amazing marks met there over the years. It is early in the season but the whether should be nice so there should be some good competition and teams should find out about where they stand.”
This year’s meet will feature some 700 athletes from approximately 30 schools. The majority of the teams hail from the Lowcountry but a few teams from other parts of the state will participate. Summerville, Fort Dorchester, Ashley Ridge, Woodland, Pinewood, Wando, Bishop England, West Florence, Whale Branch and Carvers Bay are just a few of the schools registered.
Last year the Cane Bay girls edged out Colleton County and Summerville to win the girls’ meet. Stratford ran away with the boys’ title.
