The Green Wave boys' soccer team has some holes to fill after losing 11 seniors at the end of last year but the team is off to a pretty good start.
“The dynamics of this team are totally different,” Summerville coach Jason Rasner said. “We will have to work harder and play smarter. It will take the guys some time to get used to how everyone plays but they are coming along. The preseason was a learning experience for a lot of these guys but we are learning and working hard.”
While the team is relatively young, it does return seven players with a lot of varsity experience.
Team captain Brandon Cook and fellow senior Austin Lake have returned to lead the Wave offense. Junior Madison Socha brings a lot of game experience to the midfield.
Junior captain David Kennedy and goalkeeper Bailey Shelbourne, the team's only other senior, return to anchor the defense.
Walker Riley and Austin Richardson are also back after seeing considerable action with the varsity last season.
Shelbourne will also be used some up front. When he is, freshman Ashton Tanner will tend goal.
Other members of this year's squad are Ryan West, Davis Wiggins, Cole Betcher, Ryan Brislin, Alek Martyn, Chris Miller and Mitchell Cook. There are also a few JV players Rasner is considering bringing up, but none of them had been added to the roster at press time.
Summerville won all of its games during the James Island preseason tournament but had to settle for second place due to tiebreaker criteria. Shelbourne, Cook and West were named to the all-tournament team.
The Wave opened its regular season Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Hilton Head, the No. 2 ranked Class AAA team in the state.
“I'm not disappointed with that effort,” Rasner said. “Hilton Head is a good team. They outplayed us in the first half, but then we had the run of play for about 20 minutes. We had opportunities but we just didn't finish. If we just could have put another goal away it would have changed the tone of the game.”
Hilton Head's final goal came on a late penalty kick.
Summerville's next home game is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 15 when the Wave opens region play against Colleton County.
