Bridges nearly perfect in Bazzle's historic victory
Coach Burt Bazzle notched the 500th win of his Green Wave baseball career Monday, a 2-0 victory over Goose Creek.
Bazzle took over as head coach of the Summerville High School baseball program in 1986. Among his other accomplishments is leading the Green Wave team to a Class AAAA state championship in 2003.
Freshman pitcher Sawyer Bridges tossed a one-hitter on his home field to pick up the win and help Bazzle met the career benchmark. The southpaw faced 21 batters in the game, fanning three and walking none. The only blemish to his performance was a single hit by Gator pitcher Cody Smith in the top of the seventh inning.
After Smith's hit, Summerville brought in closer Billy Peatross who got the next batter to ground into a double play to end the game. Goose Creek did put two other batters on base due to Summerville fielding errors.
“That was a strong pitching performance by Sawyer and then Billy at the end,” Bazzle said. “Defensively all around we played well and we managed to scratch across a couple of runs. It wasn't an onslaught of hitting but we hit enough. I'm proud of them. That was a good comeback from our game Friday when we made some errors and gave the game away.”
Summerville had six hits in the game. Johnston McCurry was 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs. Catcher Miles Goodwin was 2 for 2. TJ Hopkins and Craig Lilenthal had the other hits.
Smith faced 24 Wave batters, fanning five and only walking two.
Devonte Base opened the bottom of the third inning with a walk and then advanced on a wild pitch and groundout by Lilenthal. McCurry then drove him in with a single for the game-winning run.
Lilenthal singled in the fifth and then scored on McCurry's second single for the 2-0 margin.
Summerville had some players filling in for players who were injured and Bazzle said they stepped up.
“Michael Powell slid over to center field and did a good job and Craig Lilenthal went in at right field and got a big hit for us,” the coach said. “John Eckley played well at third which isn't where he normally plays. I'm proud of those guys.”
Summerville improved its record to 4-2 with the win.
