Henry Ethan Geddings, 95, went to his heavenly home March 11, 2013 to be with Jesus. Henry leaves behind a blessed family and many good friends.
†Born February 13, 1918 in Sumter County, SC, he spent his youth on a Farm working beside his Father Ned Samuel Geddings and his Mother Estelle McLeod Geddings. At the independent age of 16 he moved to the town of Sumter where he worked in R.M. Bowick’s Grocery Store and then later on to the Army where he spent 22 months overseas during World War II building runways and helping to set up Eisenhower’s Headquarters with the 358th General Engineers.††††
After the war, he settled in Charleston, SC where he met his wife Nell Grimes Geddings (preceded in 2008) and he worked at the SC Ports Authority as a Carpenter Shop Foreman. Later, and for the majority of his career, he worked as a Framer and master Trim Carpenter (McAdams Construction of Charleston) helping to build many homes in the Charleston area including his own home in Summerville, SC. He was a Christian and a long-time member of Ladson Baptist Church.
After retiring at the youthful age of 62, Henry planted a large vegetable garden, which he shared with family and friends until he was 85. In retirement, Henry also had a love for the Ladson Flea market where he made many friends and bought and sold small tools and knives. Henry was happiest when he was around people. He especially enjoyed his weekday morning breakfast at Eva’s Restaurant in Summerville and his frequent get-togethers with his “buds”.
He leaves behind his Bible by his favorite sitting chair, his beloved cat Sonny, a loving daughter Julie Ann Zoller (Fred) and a very thankful son Kenneth Lenaire Geddings Sr. (Helen). He also leaves behind his sisters Margie Geddings Pridgen and Doris Windham both of Sumter and grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded by his son Donald Stephen Geddings, stepson William Allan Hood and brothers Roland Geddings, Harry Geddings, Gene Geddings, and sister Louise Timmons.
Funeral services were held at Parks Funeral Home Chapel Thursday morning, March 14, 2013 at 11 o’clock, officiated by The Reverend Howard McGramer. Burial was held Summerville Cemetery. Friends called at Parks Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 – 8 o’clock.
Arrangements by Parks Funeral Home, 130 West 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.
