Calhoun’s walkoff lifts Patriots over Wildcats

  • Thursday, March 14, 2013

The Fort Dorchester softball team had to battle, but earned a 7-5 win over West Ashley Monday.
“We’ve had a hard time so far settling in defensively in regards to playing clean and not making errors,” Patriot coach Shae Mansor said. “We still made errors against West Ashley but we fought offensively. We strung some hits together.”
The lead changed hands a few times before Jessyca Calhoun hit a walkoff triple down the left-field line in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs and clinch the win. She and Kaitlyn Kerley were both 2 for 4 at the plate.
Mackenzie Broughton pitched a complete game to pick up the win in the circle.
The Patriots improved to 3-6 on the season with the win, including preseason tournaments. West Ashley fell to 3-5.
“Right now we are just trying to find the chemistry,” Mansor said. “We will keep making adjustments and improvements but these girls are resilient and very intelligent so I think we will be ok.”
Fort Dorchester opens region play Wednesday when they host Beaufort. Then the Patriots hit the road for a game against Ashley Ridge March 22.
