A new runner to the annual Summerville Family YMCA 10K race was the first to cross the finish line Saturday.
Jeff Baxter, a 36-year-old Director of Development for Noisette Company, finished the 10K course in 35 minutes and 41 seconds to win the 2013 Shamrock Shuffle, formerly known as the Flowertown Festival Race.
“We were fortunate to have mild temperatures today so I was able to keep a pretty good pace,” the North Charleston resident said. “This is my first time running in this event and I enjoyed it. By the end I was working through some of the 5K traffic and everyone was encouraging me.”
Baxter trailed another runner for the first few miles, but then pulled ahead around the fourth mile of the race.
“I hit that down-hill stretch on the back end of the course and felt really good,” Baxter said. “I was pleased with my finish. That is a good time for me.”
Jason Annan finished 26 seconds later to claim runner-up honors for the 10K and 50-year-old Jerome Brinkley placed third with a 39:28 time.
Summerville’s Jennifer Kryzanowsk, 25, won the Female Overall Division with a 42:27 finish. Audrey Morgan (43:23) was the runner-up in the division and Janet Carter (43:30) placed third.
David Bourgeois (39:52) won the Male Masters Overall Division and Camelia Marculescu (43:54) won the Female Masters Overall Division.
This year 187 runners/walkers finished the 10K event while 485 participants finished the 5K race, according to official race results. Several more participated in the one-mile fun run.
Josh Minton, 19, won the 5K Shuffle with a 17:18 finish. Eric Bohac of North Charleston finished in 18:33 to claim runner-up honors and Summerville’s Justyn Lodge claimed third place with a 19:07 time.
Three Summerville runners swept top honors in the Female Overall Division for the 5K. Lucinda Hughes, 47, won the division with a 21:36 time. Jaime Torek placed second with a 22:30 time and Kasey Grossman placed third with a 23:15 time.
Ron Menchaca (19:25) won the Male Masters Overall Division for the 5K and Mary Mauldin (23:51) won the Female Masters Overall Division.
This is the first year the event has featured a costume contest and many participants showed up in green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Leah Montroy of Ladson took first place in the contest.
