SC Connections Academy opens enrollment for 2013-2014

  • Thursday, March 21, 2013

Enrollment for the 2013–2014 school year has officially begun at South Carolina Connections Academy, the virtual public charter school for students in grade K–12 from across South Carolina.  Interested parents and students are encouraged to learn more at one of the many in-person or online information sessions offered by the school. Early enrollment is also encouraged, especially for families new to virtual school.
South Carolina Connections Academy is a fully online virtual public school that students attend from home.  South Carolina Connections Academy delivers a high-quality, personalized education for students that combines certified teachers, a proven curriculum, technology tools, and community experiences—online and in person—to create a supportive environment for children who want an individualized approach to education. Students work with certified teachers online and on the phone while a parent or other adult “Learning Coach” monitors progress in the home. SCCA currently serves 3,200 students from across South Carolina. As a public school, there is no tuition to attend.
SCCA will host free parent information sessions throughout the spring and summer to fulfill the growing number of requests for information. At the information sessions, parents and students will have opportunities to learn about the school’s curriculum and thoroughly explore the program. They can also interact with school representatives and parents. A complete schedule with dates and locations is available online or by calling (800) 382–6010.  For those unable to attend an in-person information session, real-time online sessions with a school representative are available. Through another option, Parent-to-Parent meetings, interested families have the opportunity to speak with current school families in a more casual setting.
Prospective students and their parents can also learn about SCCA via many social networks. Families may follow the schools on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, watch videos on YouTube and read Virtual Learning Connections, the blog for families interested in supporting K-12 learning from home.
South Carolina Connections Academy Executive Director Allison Reaves encourages families considering virtual school to attend an informational meeting because, although the school is a great fit for many students, it isn’t the right choice for everyone.
“Our goal is to really let parents and students know what they can expect from virtual school and how they can help support their student’s success,” Reaves said.  “In particular, with fully-online school, parents have to make a commitment to be involved in their child’s education.”
