More sewer problems for Trotters Ridge

Residents of Trotters Ridge looked out their windows to an unwelcome sight Sunday – water bubbling up out of the sewer manholes on Trotters Club Way.
The heavy rains flooded Rumphs Hill Creek and sent water into their streets and yards and forced the sanitary sewer to overflow.
Evyonne Thurman said the sewage was bubbling up about two inches above the standing water, and the flood was so deep the county’s sump truck parked in her yard because the driver couldn’t tell where the road was.
The flooding in Trotters Ridge has been a problem for several years now. Residents last appeared before County Council on March 4, after another series of heavy rains.
At the time, they were told the wastewater problem had been resolved and the remaining issue was primarily one of stormwater.
Jeanette Rehrig ridiculed that notion Sunday.
“Come on over and enjoy the mild scent of sulfur in the air and hear the roar of the Eadie's Vacuum trucks siphoning the sewer manhole - all to remind you that "yes, Virginia," there IS a SEWER problem,” she wrote in an e-mail.
“Management and oversight of this issue is RIDICULOUS!!!”
Council Chairman Bill Hearn, who represents the area, toured the neighborhood Sunday along with Council Administrator Jason Ward, Public Works Director Matt Halter, and Water and Sewer Director Kristen Champagne.
“It is everything that you described and we are working to come up with both a short-term and long-term solution,” he replied to Rehrig.
Ward said the problem remains one of stormwater, because the sewer doesn’t overflow on dry days.
The county is working on an interim solution to prevent stormwater from entering the manhole and to block any stormwater/wastewater mix from exiting through the manhole.
