Town leaders are dissatisfied with the progress of the new fire station and want to fire the construction company leading the project.
Summerville Town Council met Wednesday for a special called meeting and immediately went into executive session to discuss contractual matters.
About 45 minutes later, council returned and the six members present voted unanimously to negotiate with Linden Corporation a termination of the contract.
Councilman Bob Jackson was absent.
Council authorized Mayor Bill Collins to unilaterally terminate the contract if the negotiations are unsuccessful.
Council members were tight-lipped after the meeting, and Town Attorney G.W. Parker said specifics of why the town is seeking termination couldn’t be discussed until an agreement is reached.
However, the town and its general contractor have apparently already agreed to a 14-day work stoppage.
The town broke ground on the Knightsville-area fire station at the intersection of Central Avenue and Butternut Road in November.
The $1.27 million station will be the fifth in town.
Plans for a station in that area have been in the works for years. The lack of nearby fire coverage scuttled plans to annex Knightsville Elementary School, when school officials balked at the thought of a fire truck trying to get from downtown Summerville through congested Central Avenue to the school in an emergency.
The town bought the land for the station in 2011 and is using a combination of fire impact fees and hospitality taxes to pay for construction.
Linden Construction couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
