The Green Wave softball team will host its annual Azalea Invitational Tournament at Gahagan Park April 1-2.
This year the high school fastpitch softball tournament will feature 15 teams from across the state of South Carolina plus a team from Ohio (Bay High). Lowcountry participants include Colleton County, Stratford, Goose Creek, Beaufort and Summerville.
“There is a pretty good mix of teams,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “The competition level should be pretty strong across the board. There is no telling who is going to win the tournament, but I can guarantee there are going to be some good softball games played.”
The tournament will feature a pair of Top 10 teams from Class AAAA and a team ranked in Class AAA. Summerville is the No. 3 team in the state coaches’ 4-A poll while Boiling Spirngs is ranked fifth. Chapin enters the tournament as the No. 5 team in the coaches’ 3-A poll.
Each team will play three pool games April 1 and then be assigned to one of four brackets based on their performances on opening day.
Summerville opens the tournament Monday at 10 a.m. against Woodruff. The Green Wave will then face Wade Hampton at 11:30 a.m. and Bay High at 3 p.m.
Stratford opens play at 10 a.m. Monday against Colleton County. The Knights will then face Blue Ridge at 11:30 a.m. and Dorman at 1 p.m. Goose Creek opens play at 10 a.m. Monday against Clover. The Gators will then face Chapin at 11:30 a.m. and Boiling Springs at 3 p.m.
Bracket play is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. April 2.
