Zach Mosay put in five solid innings on the mound and made big contributions with his bat Wednesday to lead the Green Wave baseball team to an 8-0 victory over Ashley Ridge.
“It took us a while to warm up at the plate but I’m really proud of our pitching tonight,” Summerville coach Burt Bazzle said. “The way our guys threw allowed us to get our bats going a little. We got some hits and other guys found ways to get on and that was big for us.”
Mosay and reliever Johnston McCurry combined for a two-hitter. Mosay threw the first five innings and only surrendered two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. McCurry pitched the final two innings and surrendered no hits and one walk while fanning three batters.
John Sanchez took the loss for Ashley Ridge after pitching the first five innings and surrendering five runs. He fanned eight Wave batters and surrendered four walks.
At the plate, Mosay went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Matty Powell was also 2 for 4 at bat. He scored two runs and drove another run in. Craig Lilenthal, McCurry and Mosay all reached base three times for Summerville.
The Wave improved to 7-7, with a 4-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win. Ashley Ridge dropped to 4-9, 1-4.
McCurry led off the top of the first inning with a walk. He moved to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Miles Goodwin. After that, Summerville struggled offensively for a while.
Ashley Ridge had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. Kyle Hongsermeir singled and the Swamp Foxes then loaded the bases when Hunter Grover and Aaron Miller walked. But Summerville got out of the inning with a force out at home. In all, Ashley Ridge stranded six base runners while Summerville stranded nine.
Summerville added a run in the fourth. Matty Powell reached on an errant throw and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Powell and to third on a wild pitch. The Ashley Ridge catcher’s throw to third was wide, which allowed the base runner to come home for a 2-0 Summerville lead.
The Wave scored three runs in the fifth off two hits and a few Swamp Fox miscues. Lilenthal reached on an error and advanced on another error. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Matty Powell drove in courtesy runner Daquan Wrighten with a single and scored on a double by Michael Powell for a 5-0 Wave lead.
After Summerville loaded the bases in the sixth, Mosay singled to drive in McCurry and Lilenthal. The final run came in the top of the seventh when shortstop Devonte Base plated Michael Powell with a stand-up double.
On March 29, Summerville travels to Fort Dorchester. Ashley Ridge’s next game will be in the Hanahan Invitational Tournament scheduled to begin April 1.
