Longtime Pinewood Preparatory School Athletic Director Nancy Beatty will not return to the school next school year.
Beatty, who came to Pinewood 11 years ago in the role of PE teacher and basketball coach, has accepted a position as Athletic Director at Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C. effective July 1.
“While Pinewood is saddened to see her go, the school is happy for what this opportunity can provide as Nancy enters this exciting stage of her career,” Pinewood spokesperson Gail Osborne said. “Nancy has been a beloved member of the Pinewood team for over a decade. In the intervening decade Nancy has distinguished herself as an outstanding teacher, leader, and most importantly - human being. She has established our women's basketball team as the best in state four times and has helped a legion of young ladies advance their games, hone their skills, and most importantly - grow into young adults. Nancy is the consummate role model and a fantastic communicator for our school. We will miss her.”
The school is actively searching for a new athletic director but has named Tony Bulford as the new head coach for the Lady Panthers basketball program.
“Mr. Bulford will not only will bring to the position a deep knowledge of the sport but, more importantly, he is an inspiring educator who has served our school for many years,” Osborne said. “Our girls will benefit greatly from his coaching experience and his ability to build strong meaningful relationships.”
Bulford has served Pinewood since 2000. In addition to working in athletic administration and teaching in the history department, he has been part of the boys’ basketball program during his entire tenure.
He currently serves as assistant athletic director and teaches both AP US History and Government. He came to Pinewood Prep from Charleston Southern University where he served as an assistant. He was also an assistant coach at Chowan College in North Carolina. Bulford has Masters and Bachelors degrees from the University of Scranton.
