Green Wave JV clinches HIT championship
The Green Wave defeated James Island 9-4 Saturday to claim the 2013 Hanahan Invitational Tournament Junior Varsity Championship.
Sophomore Kyle Smith went the distance on the mound to pick up his second pitching win of the tournament and went 2 for 4 at the plate for Summerville, which improved to 15-1 on the season with the win in the title game. After losing its second game of the season, the Wave JV has won 14 straight games.
“This group of players doesn’t always do everything right, but they are probably the most cohesive group we’ve had,” Summerville coach Alan Bridges said. “They fight and everyone contributes.”
Summerville tallied 12 hits during the game.
Andrew Kenny was 3 for 3 at bat with two RBIs and two runs scored. Chad Mathis was 2 for 2. Both his hits were doubles and he scored two runs. Bo Gobin drove in two runs with a hit and reached base four other times.
James Island scored a run in the first inning to take the lead and then scored three runs off four hits and a walk in the third.
Summerville then rallied in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead and added four runs off four hits and two walks in the seventh.
Summerville advanced to the championship game with an 11-1 win over Ashley Ridge in the semifinals Friday. Cameron Almond went the distance on the mound and threw a three-hitter. He fanned five batters while only surrendering one base on balls.
Summerville tallied 13 hits in the game. Jack Bahen was 2 for 3 at the plate while Steven Dibble, Wilson Beattie and Hundley McCurry were all 2 for 4. Parker Bass, Dibble, and Smith all drove in two runs. Beattie and Smith both scored two runs.
Other members of the team include Aaron Greene, Madison Avant, Trevious Tucker, Dylan Chapman, Walker Pennington and Cooper Knowles.
